Couples Therapy & EFT in South Orange, NJ
When a couple finds themselves returning to the same argument, or when a sense of closeness has quietly faded, it is easy to conclude that something is fundamentally wrong between them. More often, the two people have settled into a pattern that neither knows how to interrupt. These patterns can be changed. I work with couples throughout South Orange, Maplewood, and the greater Essex County area to rebuild communication, trust, and connection.
What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?
Emotionally Focused Therapy is among the most thoroughly researched approaches to couples work. Its central premise is straightforward: most recurring conflicts are not truly about the disagreement at hand, but about whether each partner feels heard, valued, and secure. EFT helps a couple slow down these cycles, understand the emotions driving them, and use those moments to move toward one another rather than apart.
The couples I work with
Partners caught in the same recurring argument
Couples who have come to feel more like roommates than partners
Those working to rebuild trust following infidelity or a breach of confidence
Couples navigating a significant transition, such as parenthood, relocation, or an empty nest
Differences in intimacy, communication, or long-term goals
Couples of all kinds
What sessions involve
We meet together as a couple. In the early sessions, I help both partners identify the cycle they repeatedly fall into — who tends to pursue, who tends to withdraw, and what each is feeling beneath the surface. From there, the work becomes learning to reach for one another differently. I take an active role in session, gently interrupting the familiar pattern as it arises so that you can practice something new.
