My Approach to Therapy

Everyone shows up with a different story, so I don't run every client through the same method. I'm an integrative, or eclectic, therapist, which means I pull from a few well-established approaches and fit them to you.

I'm Sean Gilligan, LCSW, practicing in South Orange and serving Maplewood, Montclair, and Essex County.

What eclectic means here

It doesn't mean making it up as I go. It means I've trained in more than one tradition and I choose on purpose, based on what will actually help you:

  • Psychodynamic therapy, for understanding the patterns and history under a problem

  • Psychoanalytic work, for deeper, longer-term insight and change

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), for practical tools when a specific thought or habit is the target

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), for couples trying to reconnect

What stays the same

Whatever the approach, the relationship does most of the work. Clients tend to say I'm warm, easy to talk to, and straight with them. We'll talk in plain language and adjust as we figure out together what's helping.
