LGBTQ+ & Queer-Affirming Therapy in South Orange, NJ

It helps to see a therapist who already gets it, so you're not spending the first month explaining yourself before you can get to what you actually came in for. My practice is a comfortable, affirming place for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples in South Orange, Maplewood, Montclair, and Essex County.

I'm Sean Gilligan, LCSW. I've worked with queer and LGBTQ+ clients throughout my career, including years in private practice in Chelsea in Manhattan, and I bring that experience to a warm, low-key style of therapy.

What we can work on

  • Coming out, and the questions that keep coming after it

  • Identity, self-acceptance, and the stigma you've taken in

  • Relationships and intimacy, for individuals and for couples

  • Anxiety, depression, and the ordinary stress of minority stress

  • Family conflict and chosen family

  • Dating, community, and finding where you belong

What affirming means here

Affirming, for me, is mostly about how the sessions actually feel. You won't have to educate me or make a case for who you are. Whatever you came in for is where we put our attention, and I take your experience as it is from the first session on.

How I work

I work psychodynamically, so we look at the patterns and history underneath what's bothering you while staying grounded in your life right now. Clients often say I'm warm and easy to talk to. That's the kind of room I try to keep.
